Resources for making the most of China and the Chinese language. This is a page in progress.
Chinese language:
Learning:
- ChinesePod: podcast and accompanying website for the learning of Mandarin Chinese. Podcast episodes are free (can be download through iTunes or as MP3 files). Paid membership allows access to additional features such as podcast transcripts, online learning center, etc.
Translation:
- PlecoDict: an English/Chinese dictionary and flashcard program for Palm OS and PocketPC PDAs. Includes a character recognition feature (i.e. you can draw characters you don’t know and get their definition).
China:
Studying Abroad:
- Freeman-Asia: offers scholarships for students studying abroad in Asia
Wikis:
- Wikipedia: learn about and contribute your own knowledge about China (but cite your sources!)
- Wikitravel: research travel in China and contribute your own insider knowledge of the country
Documentaries:
- Documentaries about the PRC and documentaries about Chinese topics (Wikipedia lists). If you know of any missing titles, add them to the lists (while keeping with existing style).
Cens0rship circumvention:
- Tor: software program that allows for cens0rship circumvention and more anonymous browsing. Slow but potentially the most secure option.
- Psiphon: software for using a friendly computer in a non-cens0red country as a secure proxy.
- Proxy websites: sites such as proxzee.com and anonymouse.org. Websites that allowing the viewing of bann3d websites. No software required, faster than Tor but less secure.
