A Closer Look at Proxzee
Props to my favorite blogging produce, the Weifang Radish (mirrored), for finding an excellent proxy site in the form of Proxzee.com. Having used Anonymouse as my proxy of choice for accessing “non-kosher” websites in China during the past several months, Proxzee has three advantages that are immediately apparent to me:
- Proxzee is much faster than Anonymouse (and Tor, for that matter).
- Proxzee seems to support cookies, which means one can log in to user accounts on most (or all?) websites using Proxzee. Anonymouse doesn’t support this.
- According to a WhoIs search, Proxzee is based in Texas. This means that English language surfers no longer have to worry about websites popping up in foreign languages when such sites jump to conclusions based on a foreign-based proxy’s IP address.
Like Anonymouse, Proxzee is also advertisement-subsidized, seemingly in the form of rare, full-page pop-ups. Proxzee’s IP address has also been blocked from editing Wikipedia, so don’t get your hopes up about that.
As the Radish said, Proxzee is not a replacement for Tor (especially if you’re looking for a high level of privacy/security), but it is a quick and easy compliment to the onion routing system.
If ever you find yourself logging on to Dave’s Wagon from China or elsewhere only to get the infamous “connection timed out” message, Proxzee might just be your best way back.
UPDATE: A possible other advantage, Proxzee obfuscates the URLs that it mirrors. This is to say, the URL being mirrored does not show up in the Proxzee URL. For example, the URL for the English version of Google, mirrored through Proxzee, is http://www.proxzee.com/index.php?q=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5nb29nbGUuY29t&hl=111110100 (i.e. complete gibberish). This could be intentional or otherwise, but it nonetheless would seem to guard against the bl0cking of b4nned terms anywhere within a web address.
An apparent disadvantage to Proxzee I’ve discovered: browsing Wikipedia seems to generate a fair number Wikipedia-specific “Bad title” errors. These errors seem to crop up when using links to jump between articles in Wikipedia, and neither reloading the page nor re-clicking the link resolves this. I’ve never once seen this kind of problem in all my time browsing Wikipedia, mirrored or not, so I can only assume this is a Proxzee problem.
UPDATE: Proxzee now seems to have been blocked on the Mainland. It was good while it lasted.
A Closer Look At Proxzee…
As originally posted at Weifang Radish (proxzee’d), Dave’s Wagon gives a bit of a review of the latest way to dig under the Great Firewall of China. Though similar to Anonymouse, Proxzee seems quite a bit faster….

↓ Quote | Posted November 28, 2006, 10:01 pmthe next big think will be psiphon, i’m installing it tonight.
it will allow people in uncensored areas to setup a proxy on their computers and then allow specific users to log in via a browser to their machines and access otherwise blocked material.

I have not been able to access it from here for 6 months now. Using anonymouse I can acccess it but still not login to edit the pictures. 2 questions: will proxzee let me login? If no, any suggestions?
↓ Quote | Posted December 5, 2006, 12:28 pmYokiekuma, if you edit your website through a web browser (instead of, say, an FTP client) you should be able to use Proxzee to login and work on you site. A tool called Tor should also work for this. If that doesn’t do the trick, the Psiphon thing that dave mentioned might be worth looking into.

↓ Quote | Posted December 6, 2006, 11:41 amProxzee.com in now blocked in China. Oh, joy of joys. Can you suggest another alternative other than Anonymouse? Everything was going so well…
↓ Quote | Posted May 30, 2007, 6:49 pmI’m sorry to hear that. As I’m not in China anymore, I haven’t been keeping up with proxies very well. If you know someone in an uncensored country that would be willing to share a Psiphon connection with you, that would be great, otherwise I would just recommend finding another proxy website or using Tor.
