Two things that caught me off guard during my time in Hong Kong: public decorations declaring “Merry Christmas” and the local Park ‘N Shop playing Christmas hymns (not Christmas music, Christmas hymns) over their PA system. Contrast this to America where the religion-neutral “Happy Holidays” is the slogan of choice and any audible mention of The Lord and Savior Jesus Christ over a public broadcast system is a definite no-no.

Maybe we’re forsaking our own culture, or maybe we’re just more “tolerant”. Whatever the case, if you’re looking to experience an authentic American Christmas, at least as far as the public square is concerned, China might be the better bet.
