Home Away from Home

I’m back from Hong Kong. I had a good time overall, but ten days was a bit too much time to spend in a city that is not overly geared towards tourism. I did some shopping, visited the the peak, saw the big Buddha, and went to various other sites, but midway through I was already bored.

I’m glad to be back on the Mainland again. Hangzhou already feels like home to me. As soon as I got back from the airport, I walked down the street to get dinner and realized that the task had simply become a walk to get dinner, not a walk to get dinner in China. Even though my comprehension is still terrible, it was comforting to hear the familiar sounds of Mandarin on the streets again instead of the alien gibberish of Hong Kong Cantonese.

It’s good to be back.

  1. Not geared towards tourism? I thought HK was a big tourist stop. Lots of shopping, etc. I figured they were low on history, but high on commerce.

  2. Not being a big shopper myself, I guess I can’t fathom visiting the city just for that.

  3. I felt the same after i got back from my trip to Chengdu. It’s amazing how comfy Hangzhou felt. It gets worse when you come back state-side– reverse culture shock is very difficult.

  5. Sorry, Jared, Hangzhou is my home in China, but I’m still looking forward to my return to the U.S. I’m to the point where I need a break from China.
