Paving the Way for Laowai-to-Be
For those of you who have been in China long enough to acquire some useful local knowledge, might I suggest you head over to Wikitravel and contribute your gems of wisdom.
Wikitravel is a wiki-based (i.e. user-contributed) travel guide website, and while there is already some great information on China and its major cities on the site, some of the pages, especially those for the lesser-known destinations, are sorely lacking in content.
If you fancy yourself as a self-styled expert in your neck of the China woods, here’s your chance to help many a laowai-to-be with your insight. Admittedly, while I myself am a bit of a wiki-addict, I realize that this kind of thing isn’t for everyone. Nonetheless, if you have it in you to contribute, you’ll have the appreciation of myself and many others.
To help out, just visit the site and search for the nation or city of your expertise, then click the “[Edit]” links anywhere on the page or the main edit tab at the top of the page. Limit general China information to the China page and city or region-specific information to their respective pages. Try to keep your advice in a neutral tone as well. Save the sass for the TalkTalkChina discussions.
Or is there a better, China-specific site, for this kind of thing? If anyone knows such a page, speak up.
It’s a pretty decent site and for the first time I added my two cents to the wiki. A little knowledge I picked up trying to exchange traveller’s checks. The only complaint I have is that the China page is far too large. It really should be broken up into smaller pages by topic. I expected the page on China to go a little into the current and past history, then give links to pages with more specific information.

↓ Quote | Posted October 26, 2006, 10:15 amYou’re right! I’m starting to get the feeling I’m turning a big dyslexic. Let me clarify what I meant. The China page starts off with a summary, not a history. That’s all I would expect on the first page along with links to other pages.
