Nuclear Intermission: North Korea Goes Atomic?

I’m crossing Pyongyang off my list of possible destinations for my November week of free travel.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (may the inherent contradictions of their name be many) announced today that they have successfully tested a nuclear weapon. The supposed test was conducted below ground, and while there was indeed a 4.2 magnitude earthquake in the area at that time, North Korea’s claim has yet to be confirmed.

Unfortunately for the DPRK, what’s left of their historic alliance with China is quickly falling to shreds. As this article in the Times Online explains, Beijing is becoming infuriated with the actions of Kim Jong Il’s regime.

If Korean War II does roll around (which looks extremely unlikely in the short-term) I’m glad at least that China is probably going to keep to themselves this time.
