If in China a Chinese were to pose to me the question “Why are Westerners so fat?”, I hoped to be able to answer cleverly with the Chinese adage “民以食为天” (food is heaven). Now, if I want to be honest, I’ll have to say “Because we believe cross-country running is a human rights abuse.”

I myself ran several years of cross-country in high school and college.

The ACLU has yet to call.
